The Sangha is the Buddhist community; it is the men, women and children who follow the teachings of the Buddha. However, according to the Theravada school, the term "sangha" does not refer to the community of sāvakas (lay followers) nor the community of Buddhists as a whole. First and most commonly, Sangha refers to those who have left home and gone into homelessness that is, monks and nuns. Under this meaning, the Sangha is the "Third Gem" in which a follower of the Buddha might take refuge, along with the Buddha and the Dharma.

Tăng là tăng đoàn Phật giáo, là nam, nữ và trẻ em những người hành theo lời dạy của Phật. Tuy nhiên, theo trường phái Nam Tông⁽¹⁾, thuật ngữ "Tăng" không dùng để chỉ cho những người cư sĩ cũng như đoàn thể những người theo Phật giáo nói chung. "Tăng", ban đầu và phổ biến nhất, được dùng để chỉ cho những người rời bỏ gia đình và sống không nhà cửa, những vị tăng và ni. Theo nghĩa này, Tăng là "ngôi Tam Bảo thứ ba" mà một Phật tử có thể nương tựa vào, cùng với Phật và Pháp.
